Database Analyst

Database Analysts organize and make sense of collections of information in order to create functional database systems. They evaluate, design, review, and implement databases. They are also hired to maintain and update existing databases to better serve the needs of businesses. Database Analysts may also play a role in the security of databases and assist in training employees on the proper use of databases.

Database Analysts perform a large part of their work independently, but they must confer regularly with management and Database Administrators to ensure they are collecting and organizing the information in the manner the business requires. The latest projections from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that Database Administrators will see a job growth of 11 percent through 2024. This will create about 13,400 jobs during this period.

 

Database Analyst Duties and Responsibilities

A Database Analyst’s duties and responsibilities will vary from project to project and company to company. There are, however, several common primary duties for nearly all Database Analysts. A review of current job listings identified the following core tasks and responsibilities.

Organize Data

Database Analysts must be able to gather pertinent information and organize it in a logical and functional manner. They will consult with management or administrators to determine what data needs to be included in the database system and will then find the best ways to organize and store this information. They will often create flowcharts and diagrams during this stage of data construction to illustrate how the data will be sorted and stored.

Design and Implement Databases

Most Database Analysts will be expected to design and implement a database system once they have worked on the data organization. They must be up-to-date on the latest practices and trends in database creation in order to perform these tasks. They must also be fluent in one or more programming languages as well, such as SQL, an industry standard.

Document Actions

Documentation is a very important part of the Database Analyst’s job. Every aspect of a database must be thoroughly recorded. These documents will serve as references for new employees and for future maintenance on the system. Database Analysts must be able then, to communicate well through writing and be able to create flowcharts and diagrams.

Test and Secure Databases

All databases must be tested for functionality and accuracy. Database Analysts may perform tests before a new system is launched as well as periodic testing on existing systems to ensure they are performing satisfactorily. They may also put in place security systems to prevent the information contained in the database from being accessed by unauthorized users.

 

Database Analyst Skills

A successful Database Analyst must be technically-inclined, a great problem-solver and possess excellent interpersonal skills. They are extremely reliable and enjoy working in teams and independently. They should also work well under pressure and tight deadlines. In addition to these traits, employers look for applicants with the following skillsets.

Core skills: Based on job listings we looked at, employers want Database Analyst with these core skills. If you want to work in this field, focus on the following.

• Knowledge of programming languages such as SQL, Javascript, CSS, HTML, and PHP
• Advanced computing skills
• Experience in creating database queries
• Data modeling experience

Advanced skills: While most employers did not require the following skills, multiple job listings included them as preferred. Add these to your skillset and broaden your career options.

• A degree in Computer Science or related field
• Software development experience
